Diagram of example hydraulic grade line. The stages of wastewater treatment are shown against historical high water line and projected high water line. In the preliminary stage, influent from the collection system enters the wastewater treatment line. Headworks screen the influent and remove grit. Next, in the primary stage, there are settling tanks. The water then moves to the secondary stage, with aeration tanks and final settling tanks for clarification. Finally, in the disinfection stage the water goes through chlorine contact tanks before being discharged as effluent.
