Society and Economy
New York State’s society and economy comprise a wide range of industries, businesses, communities, and social institutions that help New Yorkers in every region thrive.
Nearly all climate hazards that affect New York State will affect some part of this sector. For instance, inland and coastal flooding, rising temperatures and humidity, more frequent and intense extreme weather events, and a shorter snow season can create challenges for industries, services, and people. Impacts can disrupt supply chains, be costly for residents, and affect small businesses and jobs. Climate change also poses social risks, including risks to populations, education, local governments, and cultural heritage.
This chapter examines the impacts of climate change on populations and migration, the economy, education, culture, and government. It highlights different vulnerabilities among the state’s regions, populations, workers, and businesses, paying particular attention to issues of equity and environmental justice. It also explores adaptation strategies, opportunities for positive change, and emerging research needs.
